13 Chasing and Repoussé
The great tradition of chasing and repoussé, which had its artistic peak during the Renaissance, finds its full application in this course. The students will learn this ancient technique, which allows creation of jewelry through progressive plastic forming of a precious metal sheet. The techniques give the piece a lightness, plasticity and softness of lines impossible to achieve by any other means. Lessons once a week. Most of the equipment used will be provided by the school, but students will have to buy a few personal tools which will remain in their possession at tend of course (estimated cost around € 80).

Introduction, and a brief summary of the history of chasing and repoussé. Tool overview: pitch bowl, different types of pitch and its’ ingredients, punches and hammers for chasing and repoussé. Preparation of pitch and positioning of metal sheet in pitch; heating and cooling of pitch, annealing and surface treatment of metal sheet. Chasing-hammer techniques and techniques and behaviors of different chisels used on the metal sheet.
All techniques used for working the metal sheet; design transfer, tracing, initial chasing, chasing, embossing/ repoussé, finishing, cutting and polishing. Chisel irons (forging, shaping and polishing to mirror finish).
